Study Finds Long-term Insulin Use Doesnt Raise Heart Risks

Research also shows insulin use significantly lowers risks in individuals diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

For many years, physicians and researchers have debated the possible risks of long-term insulin use by patients with diabetes. Two recent studies, however, find that prolonged insulin use doesnt harm people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, and doesnt put them at greater risk of heart attacks, strokes or cancer. The research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also noted that people with pre-diabetes, who received daily basal insulin injections with the insulin glargine had a 28 percent lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes, even after the injections stopped. Glargine (Lantus) is a type of slow-release insulin that is injected once daily to help control blood glucose levels.
