The relied upon breast cancer drug, trastuzumab (Herceptin) may increase the risk of developing heart problems in older women more than once thought. A drug proven to improve disease-free and overall survival, trastuzumab has been linked to increasing the risk of heart failure in elderly women. Now, a new study shows further evidence that the risk of heart damage from trastuzumab may be higher than believed. The results published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (November 2012) studied more than 45,000 women, aged 67 and older, who had early-stage breast cancer.
