Mobile stroke treatment units (MSTUs) provide more effective care than traditional ambulance transport, according to a Cleveland Clinic study presented at the 2015 American Stroke Association conference. Led by Muhammad Shazam Hussain, MD, head of Cleveland Clinics Stroke Program, the study found that patients treated on MSTUs experienced about a 40-minute reduction in the time to treatment compared to patients who were taken by a standard ambulance to a hospital. Reducing the time between the onset of stroke symptoms and treatment is vital, since the faster healthy circulation is restored in the brain the greater the odds of minimizing brain damage.
