Are salt substitutes safe?

Salt substitutes typically replace a portion of sodium chloride with potassium chloride. For the vast majority, salt substitutes are safe. If you have been told to reduce your sodium intake, you may want to check with your cardiologist before using a salt substitute, since the amount of sodium they typically contain may still be too high for you.
