Every woman who reads romance novels knows the heroines heart flutters at the sight of her lover. It happens in real life, too, but not always for romantic reasons. Palpitations are the most common symptom of an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) and a primary reason why women seek the care of a cardiologist: the sensation is simply frightening. "Thirty to 40 percent of Womens Cardiovascular Center patients come to us complaining of palpitations. In the vast majority, the palpitations are harmless and disappear on their own," says center director Leslie Cho, MD.
