Q. I have been reading about the new diabetes drugs that help people lose weight and understand some are okay for people like me who don’t have diabetes. Do you recommend them? I just can’t seem to lose weight by dieting.

The new drugs you are referring to are the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP‑1) receptor agonists. Although it appears all GLP-1 agonists may cause weight loss in individuals without diabetes as well as with diabetes, only two have been studied well enough to seek approval from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for this indication.
