Lowering salt intake is important for people with high blood pressure, heart failure and other conditions that cause them to retain water. Many of these people satisfy their craving for a salty taste by using a salt substitute-sometimes called "light salt." However, they dont realize that the main ingredient may be more dangerous than salt itself. "Salt substitutes are not an ideal alternative for everyone. From a dietitians perspective, its better to get rid of the salt shaker entirely than to use a salt substitute," says Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian Melissa Ohlson, MS, RD, LD.
