GLP-1 agonists are super drugs for acheiving weight loss and blood sugar control, but they can have side effects. Gastrointestinal upset is common, but it tends to resolve after a few weeks of taking the drug. Recent medical literature contains multiple articles alerting physicians to adverse events identified in patients taking the blockbuster drugs liraglutide (Victoza®) and semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wygovy®, Rybelsus®) for diabetes or weight loss. The undesirable effects reported include bowel obstruction, bowel paralysis, pancreatitis and suicidal ideation. If you take one of these drugs, how concerned should you be?
