Antiplatelet Agent Helps Protect Post-Stroke Brain Function
Starved of oxygen during a stroke, the brain immediately begins deteriorating. Restoring blood flow quickly helps save brain tissue. A study presented at the International Stroke Conference in February found that giving the antiplatelet agent tirofiban (Aggrastat®) intravenously (IV) for 72 hours lessened neurological damage better than aspirin without causing bleeding in the brain. The finding is encouraging because stroke patients who present after the window for clot-dissolving medication or clot retrieval has closed have few options for improving post-stroke outcomes.
