Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the result of a disease process known as atherosclerosis. In CAD, cholesterol and other lipids accumulate in the walls of the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle. As these fatty deposits (plaques) grow, the risk they will obstruct blood flow and cause a heart attack increases.
