Advisory: Stop Weight-Loss Drugs Before Surgery

Taking this simple precaution may prevent a potentially life-threatening complication.

If you take a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist for diabetes or weight loss, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) suggests you stop the medication prior to undergoing surgery or an outpatient procedure in which sedation or general anesthesia will be used, to reduce the risk of aspirating the contents of your stomach. The drug can be safely restarted as prescribed after the procedure.
