If you carry a few extra pounds around your middle, your triglyceride levels might be high. Although high triglyceride levels (hypertriglyceridemia) may be due to a medical condition or medication, dietary reasons are more common. Triglycerides are derived from food and alcohol, and the body makes them from carbohydrates. Calories that are not used immediately are converted to triglycerides and stored in fat cells to be released later for energy.
