The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that deep vein thrombosis (DVT)-where a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins in the body (typically in the legs)-may affect as many as two million Americans each year, and the U.S. Surgeon Generals office suggests that up to 600,000 people require hospital treatment as a result. DVT is especially common after a procedure such as hip surgery, because post-surgical recovery involves lying flat.
