While statins may have gotten the fame and glory when it comes to managing the high cholesterol that can raise your risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke, it isnt the only medication that has an effect on your cholesterol levels. In fact, according to Leslie Cho, MD, Director of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic, niacin is the most effective treatment available to raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good" cholesterol). The bonus is that it also lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad" cholesterol), and triglycerides (blood fats). "Its one of the most potent cholesterol lowering agents when taken correctly," she says.
