The fast, chaotic heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation (A-fib) increases the likelihood that blood will pool in the heart and clot. If a clot is ejected into the bloodstream, it can travel to the brain and cause a stroke. Patients with A-fib must take anticoagulants to lower this risk.
