Q. I really don’t like coffee or tea, so for years I have started my day with a bottle or two of regular cola. I’d like to consume less sugar, so I’m considering making the switch to diet cola. What’s your opinion?

You are smart to consider cutting back on your sugar consumption. Added sugar—the term used to denote sugar that is not naturally found in a food, but has been added to make it sweeter—promotes inflammation, which contributes to the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), the primary source of heart attacks and strokes.
