Theres no doubt that heart disease is a major epidemic. Approximately 79,400,000 American adults, or 1 in 3, have cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD accounts for 36.3 percent or one of every 2.8 deaths in the United States and is the leading cause of death among both men and women, killing an average of one American every 37 seconds. An American Heart Association (AHA) statement released online July 12, 2010, in Circulation, says that a combination of counseling, extended follow-up with a healthcare provider, and self-monitoring of diet and exercise is the most effective behavioral intervention to reduce heart disease risk. The statement was created by the AHAs Prevention Committee of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing.
