FDA Says Fewer People Should Take Daily Aspirin

Bleeding risks may outweigh the preventive benefits for those without heart disease.

Taking a daily aspirin to help prevent a heart attack has been standard advice for just about anybody considered at risk for heart disease. But recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recommendation that essentially says daily aspirin therapy is only for individuals with diagnosed cardiovascular problems. The FDA argues that research hasnt proven a benefit for people without cardiovascular disease. The report contends that having a risk factor, such as family history of heart disease, isnt enough to risk the potential bleeding problems associated with aspirin use.
