Cigarette smoking contributes to nearly 500,000 deaths per year in the United States, often from heart attack or stroke. But the addictive qualities of nicotine make quitting very difficult. In fact, nearly 30% of U.S. smokers with cardiovascular disease (CVD) polled in 2013-2014 were still smoking, a recent study found.
