Metal-free Aortic Valve Shows Promise in Early Clinical Trials

The new prosthetic valve appears to reduce the risk of aortic regurgitation, which can be a problem after replacement heart valves are implanted.

A prosthetic aortic valve that contains no metallic components demonstrated safety and effectiveness in an early trial. Led by Cleveland Clinic cardiologist Murat Tuzcu, MD, the study of the Direct Flow Medical system resulted in low rates of mortality and stroke, as well as minimal aortic regurgitation.
