Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are mechanical pumps that are implanted in the heart when the heart can no longer pump blood effectively throughout the body. Theyre used for individuals waiting for a heart transplant or for more long-term situations when a patient with heart failure is not a good candidate for a transplant.
