That leg pain youre suffering on your morning walk may be more than just sore muscles. You may have atherosclerosis of the limbs known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), and youre probably not getting treatment for it, according to a new study in the June issue of Circulation. Researchers in Boston found that most people with PAD arent taking the medications needed to reduce their increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death. This study is a very important reminder of an unfortunate fact that patients with PAD are woefully under-diagnosed and under-treated compared to patients with other heart and vascular conditions, such as coronary artery disease, says Heather Gornick, MD, a vascular disease expert at Cleveland Clinic.
