Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of stroke 5-fold, and blood thinning with oral anticoagulant therapy (OAC) reduces the risk of stroke and death. When deciding whether to put you on a blood thinner your physician needs to assess your risks of having a blood clot and stroke relative to your bleeding risk. Your doctor may have used the CHA2DS2-VASc score to help determine stroke risk.
